Small businesses are targeted by attackers every single day — not because they’re special, but because they’re often the easiest target. The good news: the measures that stop the vast majority of attacks are practical, affordable and can be in place within weeks.
1. Multi-factor authentication everywhere
Stolen passwords cause most account takeovers. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) means that even if an attacker gets your password, they still can’t get in. Turn it on for email first — it’s the front door to everything else — then roll it out across Microsoft 365, banking and any system holding sensitive data.
2. Modern endpoint protection
Free antivirus from five years ago won’t stop ransomware. Modern endpoint protection uses behavioural detection to spot and roll back attacks, even from threats nobody has seen before. It should be centrally managed, so you know every device is actually protected.
3. Email filtering that works
Around nine in ten breaches start with a phishing email. Advanced email filtering blocks spoofed senders, malicious links and dangerous attachments before they reach your team’s inbox. Configuring SPF, DKIM and DMARC also stops attackers impersonating you to your customers.
4. Backups you’ve actually tested
A backup you’ve never restored is a hope, not a plan. Your backups should be automated, monitored daily, kept somewhere attackers can’t reach (immutable or off-site), and — crucially — tested regularly with real restores.
5. Staff awareness training
Your team is either your weakest link or your best defence. Short, regular training plus safe simulated phishing exercises turns “would that person have clicked?” into “that person reported it in ten seconds.”
